Scrappy Sunday - Let's Celebrate

Happy Canada Day! Happy 4th of the July in a few days! And most importantly, Happy Birthday to Amanda Jean in a few days!

In light of these wonderful things to celebrate we thought a celebration was in order. And what's a party without gifts?

We know that for new quilters or, really, for all quilters, acquiring scraps can be a little exciting but time consuming. We both have a quilting addiction where we are constantly in our stashes cutting and slashing. That means we have LOTS of scraps. I think I have more scraps now than I did before I started all the quilts for Sunday Morning Quilts!

Today I'd like to giveaway some scrap bags. I'll fill an envelope, or 4, with scraps a plenty. Strings, your favourite colour, some low-volume. You name it and I've probably got it! And, of course, some books get to leave the house! A Canadian reader will win a hard copy of the book, and I can send an electronic copy to an international reader. So much goodness to share!

Amanda is doing the same thing too, double your chances to win.

Leave a comment below (international guests are always welcome). Tell me, do your sewing habits change in the summer?  Or, let me know which quilt in Sunday Morning Quilts is your favourite and tell me why.

Giveaway open until Thursday, July 5, 8 am MST.

I keep "Sunday Morning Quilts" next to my favorite chair, and have even posted it on Pinterest as one of my favorite books! http://pinterest.com/haileybarb/books-worth-reading/ I have Candy Coated bookmarked as a project I'd like to make - it's one of those quilts you can just bundle up in and soak up all the delicious fabrics. And you could make it very, very scrappy!

I sew more in the fall and winter, much less in the spring and summer. I'm not sure why!

My fav quilt from your book is the Scrapper's Delight. I just the mix of color and pattern. I'm a thrifty gal and just love to use up scraps and little bits.

Colette said...

I think I might sew about the same just later at night. We are on the run unless it is like the past week and so hot you can't do anything.

Deb said...

The summer here in DE can be quite hot and humid - so I tend to keep to my sewing room where it is blissfully cool - thank God for AC.

My sewing habits change in that I have to sneak in bits here and there with all the boys home. During school, I am lucky enough to have big hunks of uninterrupted time!

I am a beginner quilter, my first quilt was made with scraps and I loved how it turned out! My sewing time slows down in the summer..too much time spent outside keeping up with the garden, flower beds, etc.:)

I love scraps, as a sewer for most of my life I have always saved them for embelsihment of the clothing or toys I made for my kids, now that I am quilting scrap saving has taken on a new demension. thanks for the giveaway.

The comment form erred out on me, so my apologies if you see my entry twice!

I can't say that my sewing habits change during the summer. I work outside the house during business hours, and I spend evenings with the family until kiddo goes down for bed. All of my sewing takes place between 10:00 PM and 2:00 AM.

My quilting habits have not changed with the season. I just love quilting.

Sarabeth said...

Hi Cheryl,
Congratulations on the book! I'm a new quilter so still building up my scrap stash and don't know yet about seasonal habits. I haven't seen the whole book yet but from reading posts I do like Candy Coated!

Summer weather is late in arriving here in the UK so recently I bought a copy of Sunday Morning Quilts and am in the process of getting colour sorted and making slabs for Missing U. I even joined up with some others in an international Bee to have fun and share in the process of making blocks and swapping them. Winning some fabric would be the icing on the cake as the Low Volume is next!!

Hi there! I've seriously been having dreams of making some very scrappy quilts and am longing to get my hands on your book! It's on my birthday list, hoping to either win it or order it for my birthday and let my husband know I did it! My quilting does change a bit in the summer, it's more the shades and tones of fabrics that I long to use in my quilts, summer I want to quilt light and bright colors! I think the quilt on the front is my favorite of the ones I've see so far!

I sew much more in the summer. I am a teacher and summer break to sew is one of my favorite times of the year. I appreciate your blog. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for the chance to win. I sew every day, all year. I am in love with quilting and can't go too long without piecing something.

OH I just ordered the book on Saturday!!! I am a new er quilter and just LOVE your (and Amanda Jean's) quilts! I would love an envelope of scraps! They would be added to a very small collection of fabric! :)
PS I JUST finished my first and second quilts this week! The third is half way bound! YA I am now a quilter!! :) (lets not mention the eight other quilt tops I have yet to quilt! LOL)

artsycraftsyivy said...

I think my favorite is the one with the white squares and all the mono-colored strips framing the squares. I think it's good practice for grouping like colors together. Thanks for the giveaway :)

I don't think my sewing changes in the summer. I share my love of sewing with a few other crafts, so it just depends on
what I am in the mood of doing. Thanks for the chance to win.

I have 3 little boys, ages 6, 4, and 1.... so summertime is mostly spent playing outside, bike riding, swimming, or at the park. Once the cool weather hits we are back inside more and the sewing machine is humming once again. Oh, a fellow Canadian here!

Haley said...

I'm pretty new to quilting, so I don't have too many habits yet. I have noticed that preference in color palette shifts with the season (that goes for other crafts, too). Thanks for a nifty giveaway; as a beginning quilter, I have a scarcity of scraps.

Nancy said...

Hi from the US - my summer sewing habits are a little different than winter when it is quite cold and snowy in Iowa. In the summer I seem to sew more in mid-afternoon when I can escape the heat and humidity by hanging out in my sewing "studio" in the air conditioning. I love scraps! I love the fact that you never know exactly what a piece will look like until it is done! I am anxious to try a string quilt next.

Cherie in St Louis said...

Love scraps, in fact I get more excited looking through a new acquisition of scraps than from new fabric! We've coined a term, "Scrap Salad" to refer to a pile of scraps on the the table. As in, "I'm making or using scrap salad." :)

I'm from munich, germany, and honestly I'm sewing more in summer than in winter. I'm just in a better mood in summer;-) Thanks for the giveaway, Hildy

I'm from the USA and have started sorting my scraps to make a scrap quilt. My first. I knew I needed to save my scraps - but figuring out how to handle them and what to do with them was overwhelming to me (so I just stuck them in a box for a day I felt smart enough to handle it!). Thanks for the opportunity to win something AND thanks for all the encouraging scrappy posts you out out for us! Love the blog!

I tend to sew less in the summer. Not only would my family like to see me a little more and do things with me outside, it's HOT in my sewing room. Who wants a big quilt covering them in 90-degree weather?

Beth said...

Hi! Unfortunately I don't know which quilt is my favorite because I just discovered today that the book exists! I'm looking forward to getting a copy and checking it out. As far as quilting habits changing in the summer, mine have changed this summer. My daughter is going off to college so I'm making a quilt for her dorm room. Plus I started a couple more quilt tops because I was so excited to be quilting again. Maybe I'll piece in the summer and do the quilting in the winter?

Thanks for the opportunity to win! I'm excited to have discovered your blog and Amanda's blog.

My sewing habits change in the summer simply because I am not working in the summer. I have the pleasure of working in a school from August to May/June. I try to cut a lot during the summer when it's hot and I save my hand quilting/hand applique projects for the fall/winter. I would love to win something!

opal cocke said...

I find less time to quilt in the summer because of the lure of being out in the sun (when it isn't raining which it does often and most days. But the light in my studio is wonderful....my favorite quilt in Sunday Morning Quilts is Leaves and Vine...I love the appliqué on a background of 'slabs'....I love collecting my bits and pieces for these projects.

Vee said...

I love The Missing U and Up, Up, and Away the most.....I can imagine all the scraps I'd use and the possibilities are endless. I just need to get started :)

Yes, my sewing habits change in the summer. Instead of primarily quilts, I go to smaller projects like bags and wallhangings.

I live in the US, came here VIA crazymomquilts. My sewing habits change somewhat during the summer, mainly because I have the garden and canning to do, but also because my kids are home. So that usually means that I do quick projects like mending or maybe an apron or whatever I "need" at the moment.

Lisa said...

I sew a LOT more in the summer. I work for a school and don't have kids, so there's not a whole lot else for me to do.

Hello from Kentucky, USA! About the only thing that changes about my sewing in the summer is when I take time out for travel. Otherwise I sew every chance I get!

taravanderpol@yahoo.ca said...

Hi,

No my quilt habits don't change much during the summer. It is hard with one child to find time in front of the machine so I often sew late into the night! With twins on the way I cannot imagine how I will get anything done.

You are an inspiration with three children and a book! Which looks awesome! I would love scraps in any colour. You are super busy just jam them in and don't worry about the colours! Also congrats on the new baby! He is adorable!!!!

no I still sew about as much in Summer, probably due to my sewing room being in the cool basement.
If anything Winter is my not so often sewing time --( cold down there)

I'm a semi-new quilter but have been busting out quilts and other hand sewn goods left and right. I love sewing as I find relaxation in it.

During the summer I find that my sewing habits don't change MUCH but since I am no longer in school (took summer term off), I try to create as much as possible, while my rowdy toddler is sleeping. ;)

Thanks for the chance at winning an awesome giveaway!

In the summer I get me time for a couple hours but mostly it is his time. They are only little for a little while. On the subject of scraps I love them! I have been saving all the scraps from bloggy friends to make a quilt so I love them! I love solids too! I would really love to win a copy of your book, I live in the US. I adore scrap quilts! In the summer I find my self doing more handwork than machine sewing (small projects that lend themselves to travel so I can take the kids to the park or beach). I also buy the majority of my fabric in the summer since I always look up quilt shops when we travel.

Emily Herrick said...

I find it difficult to sew for work in the summer, but much easier to sew for FUN! Also, when it's too hot to go outside it's nice to sit at the machine and stitch away in an air conditioned room. I am so excited to win this book- make all the quilts- and then tell you which is my favorite!!! :o)

I quilt mainly in the winter as summers here in Australia can be very hot. Today is a typical cold and wet Melbournce day. Having previously been in a severe drought I still enjoy a rainny day and truly appreciate the wonderful water levels in the storage dams.
I am off to make a cover for my new Galaxy tablet. Thanks for the give away.

Spare Room Quilter said...

I usually like to sew smaller projects and lighter quilts in the summer. I'm not sure if it's because it's hotter so I don't want to spend time under a pile of hot fabric or if I just have less time to devote to sewing so I lean towards shorter projects.

Anonymous said...

I sew less when it's hot out!

My sewing time unfortunately decreases in the summer. Here in Wisconsin I need to take advantage of the warmer summer weather and spend more time outside. Also, more weekends are spent traveling in the summer when the weather is nice. Snowy, winter days are when I get the most done!

Hi there! I LOVE your book! Its really hard to choose a favorite quilt, cause they are all so beautiful, but I think I'm going to have to go with the one on the cover, mostly because of the stunning colorway you guys chose!!

Samantha K said...

For the most part, I get less sewing done in the summer. It would be nice being inside in the cool air conditioning being busy and productive, but that doesn't quite work so well living on a farm and having it light outside until almost 10 p.m. In the winter, beings I live in Minnesota, if I'm not doing chores or moving snow, I'm usually inside and have plenty of time to do my sewing then.

Meg said...

I can't possibly pick a favorite project (so much inspiration packed into one book!), so I'll have to say that in the summer, my sewing mojo often takes a little vacation. See, we only have one AC unit in the house, and that's in the bedroom. So on the hot, humid days, I just can't bring myself to turn on the iron, and I switch over to maybe a little handpiecing. It makes me happy to see cooler nights start in September, because I know sewing weather is coming back!

Anonymous said...

Generally I work on a whole bunch of projects at once. In the summer I tend to give myself some goals. I might choose to focus on free motion quilting, or fabric dying...and I usually have a list of projects I'd like to complete.

Ginny said...

Hi! Love scraps, and love you can just pick them up and cut and create something beautiful! The whole becomes more beautiful than each little piece already is. Yes, my sewing habits change in summer because I am busier and outside more, and it is lighter longer so I start sewing later in the evening and longer into the night vs. in winter

Hello from Durham, NC. I have to say, this summer I have gotten to sew much more then normal, but not necessarily on quilts! I have taken the summer to work with my older girls (I have 5 altogether) on their sewing. First up has been pajama pants. Now they want a night shirt to match! I'm thinking we'll stick with the theme and make some pillowcases, too. Happy July 4th!
